Embracing the Cuteness in Your Curls
There’s something great about the diversity of natural, curly hair, no matter whose head it ends up on. Curly hairstyles are not only sexy, but very easy to manipulate and style. With that being said, curly hair is also a little troubling to keep healthy. Although it comes with its pros and cons, curly hairstyles can be fun to play with when done right. I’ve done articles on embracing your hair, well here are the top reasons why you should really embrace all natural, curly hairstyles that your hair could possibly stand.
1. Curly Hairstyles: a Permanent Trend
We’ll cut out the talk about how curly hairstyles are exotic and attractive and just talk for a moment on the popularity of natural and curly hairstyles. In recent years, its become more of a permanent trend. Women, especially of African American race, are able to find that kinky, coily, and curly hairstyles are not as bad as originally perceived.
From the 19th century until now, we’ve seen a major shift in the way that people view their hair. It is said that Afro-centric curly hairstyles were done out of necessity, rather than to look beautiful. Slaves back in these times had no extra time for grooming or developing personal curly hairstyles due to conditions and the long hours that slave masters required. There was no reason for slaves to pay attention to their tresses.
With that being said, we’ve seen a much needed shift in the acceptance of curly hairstyles here in the 21st century. More and more we are seeing women of all colors embracing their natural, curly hairstyles. Although we as women still have our style limitations due to children or careers, we still find time to find the beauty in what we have: kinky, coily, or curly hair.
2. Curly Hairstyles are Beautiful
I was searching the world wide web and came across an interesting survey that revealed just how badly women want to rock curly hairstyles. According to a recent survey conducted by L’Oreal Paris, approximately 54 percent of women reach for their curling iron when it’s time to spice up their look. In addition to this, the survey also revealed that 47 percent of women rock their natural and curly hairstyles. So, what’s my conclusion? I think curly hairstyles are having their time in the spotlight.
Although this shift is happening, I must say I still find that women, no matter what color they are still haven’t seen the beauty in being curly. There are many times I’ve even heard non-African American women mention that their hair is nappy due to their curls being unkempt or hard to manage. I find this very disturbing, because the bottom line is: Whatever you got, you can rock, but the first step is always getting past the notion that nothing can be done with what you got.
